Final Fantasy (Owen Pallet) is a Polaris Prize-winning violinist who recently played both the Hillside festival in Guelph Lake, ON (July 24-26) and the Pitchfork Music festival (July 17-19).  The festivals were complete opposite experiences for Pallett as he described Pitchfork's fest a "festival filled with a bunch of spoiled babies... who went online to whine about everything from the music to the weather.  Every single band there was among the hottest bands I could ever hope to see, and yet people were still complaining."  "Here at Hillside, everybody could complain about the lineups for the bathrooms or the beer or whatever, but nobody's complaining - they're just having a good time."

Unfortunately, the drizzle on the Hillside turned into an outright poor while he was performing "Lewis Takes His Shirt Off" from his upcoming album, Heartland (due out at the end of 2009), as the stagehands scurried to cover the equipment with plastic. The rumored album that has taken a couple of years to make is finally in the completion stage.  Pallet, the foot pedaling looper, recorded some of the album at the Greenhouse studio in Iceland, where Bjork made some of her records.  His longtime friend and once Arcade Fire band mate, Jeremy Gara, helped him out with the record.  Final Fantasy's career started opening for and playing with Arcade Fire after their release of Funeral (2004).  Being a bachelors graduate in music composition, he wrote the string arrangements for Funeral and Neon Bible.  For his upcoming album, Heartland, he recorded alongside a 50 piece orchestra in Prague. Traveling even more to his hometown Toronto and then New York for mixing.

Video: Grizzly Bear - "Ready, Able" Live on Letterman

|

By far the best album of 2009 thus far is Veckatimest by Grizzly Bear.  The song "Ready, Able" is a whimsical taste of what it will be like on Halloween this year when they perform with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Video: Department of Eagles - "Too Little Too Late" (JoJo Cover)

|

What could be better than JoJo, the Pop / R&B artist, singing her song  "Too Little Too Late?" (refer to the original for familiarizing)  Well, it is Department of Eagles covering "Too Little Too Late."  Daniel Rossen (Department of Eagles/ Grizzly Bear) covered the song as a birthday present to fellow Grizzly Bear bandmate, Ed Droste.  With all the hoopla surrounding Grizzly Bear at the moment this is just an unexpected extra.  The song was released on Tuesday and you can download it on ITunes.

Bands in Canada are on their way to becoming the new Arkansas.  Let me explain. Doesn't it seem peculiar that everyone in Canada seems to be inbred to everyone musically?  Broken Social Scene for instance is a cluster f of members from different bands such as Leslie Feist (Feist), Emily Haines (Metric), Evan Cranley and Amy Millan (Stars), Andrew Whiteman (Apostle of Hustle) Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin (Do Make Say Think), and Jason Collett to name a few.   Now Black Mountain has started this process but in the reverse order.  Broken Social Scene's members were all successful on their own and then gathered to form a group; Black Mountain got successful then began spawning their side projects.  Ok kids, just try your best to follow.  Black Mountain consists of Stephen McBean, Matthew Camirand, Jeremy Schmidt, Joshua Wells, and Amber Webber.  Listing the names is essential in following this chaos.

One side project band called Lightning Dust includes the duo Amber Webber and Joshua Wells.  Lightning Dust's sophomore album Infinite Light (Jagjaguwar) will be released August 8, 2009.  They have been touring with Bonnie Prince Billy, Constantines, Weakerthans, Joe Rae Fletcher and Cotton Jones.  Their last show is tomorrow in Seattle, WA.

The OTHER side band lead by Stephen McBean is Pink Mountaintops, which also includes Matthew Camirand.  They are now on tour for their May 5, 2009 release of their album Outside Love (Jagjaguwar).

TOUR DATES:

06-05 The Bell House - Brooklyn, NY

06-06 Mercury Lounge - New York, NY

06-13 Big Orbit's Soundlab - Buffalo, NY

Pink Mountaintops are touring with Quest for Fire.  Their self titled debut is set to release June 9, 2009 (Tee Pee Records).  Here is a pretty spiffy video for their single "I've Been Trying To Leave" and downloads of "Bison Eyes" and "Hawk That Hunts the Walking" off their debut album.

grizzly.jpg For the next two months I'll be studying away for the California Bar Exam, which will leave me with no time to update the blog. Hopefully, Melissa will update here and there to keep things fresh -- but you'll have to wait two months for my disjointed ramblings on the music industry. I'll leave you with what is probably the best song I've heard this year -- from what is my favorite album so far this year; Grizzly Bear's "Veckatimest". Unfortunately this song has not been sanctioned for free download, so you'll have to live with the stream for now. The album comes out on Tuesday.

Grizzly Bear did allow for the distribution of the following single, "Two Weeks". Right now I've been enjoying this song as a close second to the best song on the album, above. The band released a video to go along with the track, but its such a creepy video that it takes away from the music. Typically I'd post the video, but the first few times I watched it I barely noticed how amazing the song was as I was so absorbed in the weirdness of the video.
