The 'success' of Lykke Li can be tied pretty much directly to the music blog. That being said, chances are you haven't heard of Lykke Li despite the nearly wall-to-wall coverage of her every move in the blogosphere. She is the current example of how insulated the music blog/pitchfork world is from today's mainstream music.
As far as I can tell, Lykke Li first breached the internet world when MP3 Blog flagship Sterogum announced her as one of their 'Bands To Watch' last October. Since then she's been featured on pretty much every single important music blog and written about all over Pitchfork news. At SXSW she was one of the most name-dropped new artists to check out by far. She's even had the distinction of being included on a few of my own personal mix-tapes (ehem, Natalie).
So if your whole world revolves around the internet music scene, then you probably think Lykke Li is right up there with your everyday pop princesses. However, back in the real world Lykke Li is hardly a household name. After her SXSW showcases I am interested to see what kind of momentum she's going to carry forward. I mean, if SXSW is to music as Sundance is to movies -- is Lykke Li the next Little Miss Sunshine? For that matter, is she even the next Cold War Kids (a mild success story for music blogs). Or will it turn out that all the praise and exaltation directed at the blogosphere is more self-adulation than legitimate hype?
