Just watched this excellent documentary about the record industry (I'll be careful to distinguish between the record industry and the music industry) and the myriad of reasons as to why it is in decline. I was worried when I first heard about this documentary that it was going to be some left-wing schlock about corporations ruining everything, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find otherwise. I found the documentary to be very well thought-out and well reasoned. Basically not a Michael Moore documentary.
Sure corporations take some blame, but its a more nuanced critique of quarterly business cycles not being conducive to the amount of time that a record requires to gain momentum. In fact, the documentary gives many examples of corporate business models that succeed.
My favorite part is Branford Marsalis' blunt response to the question; "what have you learned from your students". Classic.
The documentary is available for free at Hulu.com -- which says a lot about the film-makers intentions.
