Some of the most ubiquitous means of promoting music have only come into the public consciousness within the last five years; social networking, ringtones, podcasts, music blogs, widgets. While some in the music industry are investing millions in these avenues of promotion, many others are cautiously putting their feet in the water, but not jumping in.
And with good reason; what may seem like a great bet today, may not make any sense tomorrow. Just ask anyone who invested in the IPO for Sirius Satellite Radio. Satellite seemed like the answer to the limitations of terrestrial radio, but it has become apparent that the more feasible and cost effective answer is going to be accessing internet radio through the power of cellular networks -- i.e.; whenever Apple or someone else introduces iRadio. That technology is still a few months away, but Moore's Law AND Ockham's Razor both suggest that Sirius and XM are doomed.
Social networking might seem like its the real deal, but when was the last time you logged onto Myspace for anything not music related? In the same vein, how many of you even remember your Friendster login information?
Interestingly, investing in different technologies of musical promotion is starting to suffer from the same affliction that I was exploring regarding the sale of the music itself. As technology moves along the investor must follow, get in early, and get out quickly before the technology gets stale. Similarly, the I think the typical large sized music label finds themselves in the same situation; riding a wave of non-stop new bands or artists trying to suck out as much utility from that bands limited time in the lime-light before moving on to the next big thing.
In both situations Moore's Law is creating problems for those who try to make a business out of music. Technology is advancing faster than the top-down type organizations such as the large music label or the larger firms who wish to invest in emerging technologies in music technology (such as Fox investing in Myspace) have the abilities to derive and cultivate benefits. One could argue that these larger firms just have to become more regional and nimble, but even if that would work in the short term, it would only last a short time.
So what does a world without record labels look like?
