Houston is known for oil, medicine, NASA, being the fourth largest city in the U.S., sports teams (Astros, Rockets, Texans), hats like this (people don't actually wear cowboy hats and ride horses to work), and... music?  Any musician in hopes of a sustainable career tends to relocate three hours northwest to the live music capital, Austin (Spoon, Ghostland Observatory, Explosions In the Sky).  The only musical claim of fame we have is Beyonce / Destiny's Child.

There are a few noteworthy bands in the local scene: ListenListen (Toured and opened for Phosphorescent), Jenny Westbury (Opened for The Dodos at the Proletariat), Jana Hunter (Toured and opened for Beach House. We both sing horribly but there is no relation.  After watching her live it makes me think anyone could be a musician, I'm just saying.), Young Mammals (Formerly The Dimes), The Mathletes, and by far the best pop band in Houston the Wild Moccasins.  The hub of the Houston music scene seems to revolve around the singer of The Mathletes and part-time Angelika Film Center employee, Joe Mathlete.  If you attend any live show in Houston, he will be there and everyone knows him.  His music is um... off kilter.  He will sing about anything as long as it is random: unicorns, mules, asteroids, and robots.  He did a creepily nerdish obsessed version of the Cranberries "Linger."  I have seen his band play live before at Notsouh (Houston spelled backwards) and he had roughly 20 backup singers accumulated of his friends dressed in choir robes singing and blowing up balloons for the audience to write things on with markers and bat around the room.  It was quite the production.  The inspirational quote on the balloon from the gospel choir coasting my way said, "The McRib is Back!"  Joe Mathlete runs a few websites/blogs including this one that he posts in-house live performances by local musicians.

Thus leading me to the best band in Houston right now, the Wild Moccasins, who also performed in Joe Mathlete's living room.  The Wild Moccasins songs "Spanish & Jazz" and "Cake" sound remnant of old school Rilo Kiley minus the childhood star angst.  Zahira Gutierrez assumingly is a typical well off gal singer as compared to Jenny Lewis being a "$100,000 kid" ("Rabbit Fur Coat" by Jenny Lewis regarding her money earned for the role of Hannah in the movie "Troop Beverly Hills") that her abandoned mom blew on drugs and fancy things like rabbit fur coats.  Gutierrez is dating the guitarist, Cody Swann, and for the band's sake I sure hope they don't break up.  The Wild Mocassins released their 6 song debut EP, Microscopic Metronomes, on May 25, 2009.  The song "Cake" is an unreleased song recorded on Woxy along with 4 live recordings of songs on the album.
